Nota nº 349

31/05/2010 -

Versão em Inglês: Israeli raid on the “Freedom Flotilla"

The Brazilian Goverment was shocked and dismayed to learn of the Israeli attack against one of the boats in the flotilla that carried humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, which caused the death of nearly a dozen people and injured several others.

Brazil vehemently condemns the Israeli action, since there is no justification for a military intervention against a peaceful convoy of a strictly humanitarian nature.  The fact is further aggravated by having taken place, according to available information, in international waters.  Brazil believes that the incident should be the object of an independent investigation, which will fully clarify the facts under Humanitarian Law and International Law as a whole.

The tragic results of the military operation show, once more, the need to lift, at once, the blocade against the Gaza Strip, with a view to ensuring freedom of movement to its inhabitants and free access of food, medication and consumer goods to the region.

The Brazilian Government is particularly worried by the news that a Brazilian citizen, Iara Lee, was on one of the boats that comprised the humanitarian flotilla.  Minister Celso Amorim, in extending his solidarity to the families of the victims of the attack, has determined that immediate action be taken to locate the Brazilian national. Brazil’s Representative to the UN was instructed to support the calling of an extraordinary meeting of the United Nations Security Council to debate the Israeli military operation. The Israeli Ambassador to Brazil is being summoned to Itamaraty, so that the displeasure of the Brazilian Government at the incident and the concern over the situation of the Brazilian citizen be conveyed to him.
